If you want to enjoy the Langtang region, but prefer to stay off the more commercialized routes, the Tamang Heritage Trail is the choice for you! This week-long trek leads you into the daily lives of the local Tamang villagers in an enriching cultural exchange. Most people trekking in Nepal overlook the cultural fascinations involved with trekking in the Himalayas. However, when they leave the trail, often it is the experiences with the locals that are highly cherished. The accommodation along this trail is in homestays. Surround yourself with the beautiful Tamang culture for a trekking experience of a lifetime.

The Tamang people’s ancestors came from Tibet years ago. They mostly practice Tibetan Buddhism, though some practice Hinduism as well. Throughout the trail, observe and take part in Tamang customs and rituals, while seeing their many Buddhist shrines. If you want, we can plan the itinerary to align with one of the many festivals in the area, which would be a fascinating experience. Enjoy traditional dances and cuisine while in a cheerful and joyous mood.

The Tamang Heritage Trail starts with a bus drive from Kathmandu to the foothills of the Himalaya – Syabrubesi. Move towards Gatlang Village, a picturesque settlement with stone architecture on a hilltop. Though tourism has brought change to these villages, it is for the better. Besides that, much of the traditional ways of life are still practiced.

We visit Tatopani and move further to Thuman. Here exists an ancient monastery with ornate wood carvings courtesy of the artful Tamang people. Check out the ruins in Rasuwagadhi and then move further to Briddim, a most marvelous village with a nice homestay facility. Hike up to Nagthali viewpoint (3165 meters), where the views of Langtang Lirung (7277 meters) and Ganesh Himal (7422 meters) take your breathe away. From here, finish the loop trail in Syabrubesi to celebrate a successful trek before heading back to Kathmandu.

Throughout the trail, you may buy local handmade craft and clothing items from the villagers. It is mutually beneficial to buy something, as it is a keepsake for you or your family, and it supports their livelihood and raises awareness for the Tamang people.

The Tamang Heritage Trail is part of Nepal’s Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Programme (TRPAP). The purpose of the program is to bring tourist money into areas that are less well off than those along the more commercial routes. By trekking here, you are not only giving yourself a great lifelong memory, but you are also helping individuals and their communities.

Note that if you would like to combine the Langtang Valley Trek with the Tamang Heritage Trail, it is possible to do so. Just let us know your interest!

You can take the Tamang HeritageTrail all throughout the year. The best times to make the trip, though, are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These seasons provide the best weather and clearest skies, not to mention that during the springtime, beautiful flowers are in bloom. Third Eye Adventure Pvt. Ltd. handles the trek with complete management. If you have any questions about the trek, do ask!
