Upper Mustang Trek - 16 Days

  • Day 01 Arrival in Kathmandu

    Your tour starts as you arrive at the airport in Kathmandu. Upon your arrival we will greet you with a traditional garland (floral wreath worn around your neck). This is our way of saying welcome to Nepal. You will then be transferred to your hotel to settle in. You might choose to go for a walk around after some rest. Once rested we invite you to our office to be briefed on your tour and go over formalities.

  • Day 02 Kathmandu guided city tour.

    After having breakfast you will be picked up by private car and driven to Bouduhnath. Bouddhnath is the largest stupa in Asia. Around the octagonal base of the stupa are 108 images of Buddha where prayer ceremonies of Buddhist Lamas have been taking place for over 2000 years. Next you will visit the temple of Pashupatinath located on the banks of the Bagmati River. This is Nepal’s most important Hindu pilgrimage site and is dedicated to the god Shiva. In the afternoon go on a sightseeing tour of Patan city. Patan was the second largest town in the valley but it has over time been absorbed into Kathmandu. After visiting Patan you will visit the temple of Swayambhunath. This stupa, often referred to as the Monkey Temple due to the large populations of Monkey’s living here, is the most important and oldest site of Buddhist worship in Nepal. Swayambhunath Stupa is famous for the eyes of Buddha which seem to be observing the world from all 4 directions.

  • Day 03 Drive Kathmandu to Pokhara 7 to 8 hours

    Today we go by tourist bus to the lakeside town of Pokhara. Enjoy the changing scenery as you wind through the beautiful Nepalese countryside through the many valleys. Once you arrive in Pokhara you will be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy an evening stroll around the lake.

  • Day 04 Fly to Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni 3 to 4 hours.

    This morning we take an early flight to Jomsom. This breathtaking mountain flight will offer unrivaled views as you fly between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Once in Jomsom, we start our trek towards the northern valley of the Kali Gandaki gorge. As you walk, enjoy views of the snow peaked mountains surrounding you such as Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri and to the south you can see the entire Annapurna massif. Once in Kagbeni, enjoy your evening by walking around the village. This is a very interesting settlement where a clustered type of house can be found.

  • Day 05 Trek to Chele 5 to 6 hours

    The trek today heads towards the north valley of Kagbeni to the village of Chele. We pass through the photogenic village of Tangbe, with traditional houses, fields of barley, buckwheat and apple orchards. Take in the views of the magnificent Nilgiri peak and cross several ridges. After passing through Chhusang village, we cross a stream and leave the Kali Gandaki valley behind. Here we reach the village of Chele where we stay for the night.

  • Day 06 Trek to Giling 5 to 6 hours

    After breakfast the trail heads up to a ridge, where we find the village of Samar. A descent takes you down into a large gorge past a Stupa before entering a valley filled with juniper trees. After climbing up to a pass, we descend along a ridge to Shyangmochen, a tiny settlement with a few tea shops. Nearby is Rangbyung, a cave containing stalagmites in the form of a Chorten or Stupa considered one of the holiest places in Mustang. The trail descends to Giling, with its extensive fields of barley and our accommodation for the night.

  • Day 07 Trek to Charang 4-5 hours

    Today we walk through one of the driest part of Mustang. The loose, dry soil will take some energy to negotiate, however your reward will be magnificent views of the countryside, from the gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountains in the east and west. Next we arrive in Charang, a large spread-out village at the top of the Charang Chu canyon. At the eastern end of the village are huge Dzongs (fortress) and a red gompa (monastery) which houses an excellent collection of statues and thangkas (paintings).

  • Day 08 Trek to Lo Manthang 5 to 6 hours

    Before we leave Charang on our way towards Lo Manthang, we will spend some time to explore this interesting village and its large monastery. As we leave, we make a gentle climb above the valley to a large isolated Chorten that marks the boundary between Charang and Lo Manthang. The trail then widens and soon after you will see your first view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. The city has only one entrance so we walk clockwise around the wall to the gate on the north-east corner. The rest of the afternoon is spent exploring the village.

  • Day 09 Lo Manthang and surroundings

    Today you have a full day to explore this outstanding historical and cultural area. After breakfast we take horses up along the highland route. This trail will deliver some dramatic views of Lo Manthang and the Cherang Valley with snow-capped peaks in the distance. After passing through the settlement of Lo Gekar, we reach the oldest monastery in Mustang, the Ghare Gompa. After some time spent here we head back down towards Lo Manthang for lunch. After lunch we make a visit to the royal palace, home of the raja (King) and his rani (queen). After Nepal became a republic democracy the raja’s function as King has now finished. Take in this fascinating town and enjoy the countless opportunities to observe a vibrant Tibetan culture. There are many places to explore and we can manage your time to see the places that interest you the most.

  • Day 10 Lo-Mangthang to Ghar Gumpa 4 to 5 hours

    Today we leave the timeless beauty of Lo-Mangthang and head towards the interesting village of Ghar Gumpa. After climbing the ridge, take in your last view of the walled city and descend to the valley floor towards Ghar Gompa.

  • Day 11 Ghar Gumpa to Giling 5 to 6 hours.

    Today we continue down to through the valley towards the village of Giling. There will be many chances to take photographs of the surroundings. In the evening we will explore the area after the wind and dust has settled.

  • Day 12 Giling to Chele 5 to 6 hours

    After breakfast we walk back along the same track towards Chele. Your camera will no doubt get a work out again today as you walk through this wonderful landscape offering great Himalayan views.

  • Day 13 Chele to Jomsom 6 to 7 hours

    Today is the last day of trekking and will be quite long. We will walk back through the valley towards Kagbeni where you spent you first night of the trek. The last stretch is back towards Jomsom through the Kali Gandaki gorge. Once we reach Jomsom it’s time to celebrate the trek with the crew and reflect on your amazing journey.

  • Day 14 Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara

    After breakfast we check in the Jomsom airport to fly back to Pokhara. This dramatic flight takes you between the George of the two huge mountain ranges, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The Kali Gandaki Gorge is known as the deepest George in the world. Once you arrive back at Pokhara airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the time you can spend exploring the town and its surroundings.

  • Day 15 Return to Kathmandu 6 to 7 hours

    From Pokhara, it’s a six-hour tourist bus ride back to Kathmandu. The highway is cut into the side of the river valley and follows a series of steep rocky gorges, landslides and roaring rapids, crossed by precarious suspension bridges. After we enter the Kathmandu valley, fell free to shop and sightseen.

  • Day 16 Fly back to home.

    Today we do farewell to you as you are flying back to home. We put you khada on your neck as a symbol of peace, protect and love from Nepal. See you again. If you have extra days you can involve other activities as well.
