    About Trip

The Everest Three High Passes Trek is a challenging 21–22 day journey in Nepal’s Khumbu region, covering the three highest passes: Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,340 m). Trekkers also visit Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Ri, and Kala Patthar, offering breathtaking Himalayan views and exposure to Sherpa culture.

    Best Time to Go

Choosing the right time makes all the difference. The best time is in spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November).

    • Spring: The weather is warm, and the trails are clear of snow. Wildflowers are in bloom, making the lower valleys very colorful. The temperature is good for trekking.
    • Autumn: The skies are very clear after the monsoon rains. This gives you the best mountain views. The weather is stable and great for trekking.

    Route and Elevation

This trek is a full circuit of the Everest region. It starts with a flight to Lukla. From there, you follow the main trail to Namche Bazaar. You then take a less-traveled route to cross the high passes.

The trek is often done in an anticlockwise direction. This is the safest way to go, as it helps your body get used to the high altitude. It takes you to Everest Base Camp, then to the Gokyo Lakes, and finally back down. The highest point you will reach is Kalapatthar at 5,545m. The trek is a full immersion into the Himalayas.

    Foods and Accommodations

You will eat a mix of local and world food. The main dish is Dal Bhat. You can also get other foods like soups and noodles. You will get to try local dishes like Sherpa stew and yak cheese.

The accommodations are in local teahouses. The rooms are basic but comfortable. They have a bed and a warm dining area. In some villages, you may find a teahouse with a hot shower.

    FAQs

    People Also Asks

How challenging is the three-pass trek?

The three-pass trek is a challenging mountain adventure for trekkers. It involves crossing three high mountain passes over 5300m, hiking to viewpoints above 5300m three times, and spending eight nights above 4500m. To complete this trek successfully, you need prior high-altitude trekking experience and strong stamina for daily 6-hour walks on mountain trails. It also requires self-motivation and good health.

Should I do the three passes trek clockwise or anticlockwise?

The most commonly practiced route for this trek is anticlockwise, as it helps with acclimatization and offers a comfortable path to the passes. Starting from Kongma La and ending at Renjo La, you'll gradually pass through Everest Base Camp, Kalapatthar, Chola Pass, Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, and Renjo La Pass. Taking an extra day in Dingboche (4410m) and heading to Kongma La (5480m) via Chhakung (4600m) is a well-planned acclimatization strategy for high altitude. If you start the trek from Renjo La the other way, you'd have to acclimatize at 3700m in Lumde and face a much harder ascent to cross the 5360m high pass.

What are the main attractions of the three-pass trek?
