What is the best time to visit Tibet?
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) offer the best weather.
Can I travel to Tibet alone?
No. All foreign travelers must be on an organized tour. You must have a guide and a private vehicle. You cannot travel independently.
What is the Tibet Travel Permit?
This is the main permit you need to enter Tibet. We get this for you from the Tibet Tourism Bureau. We cannot send it to you. It is given to your guide.
How do I get a visa for Tibet?
If you enter from Nepal, you must get a Group Tourist Visa from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. We will handle this for you. Your home country's 10-year Chinese visa will not work.
When is the best time to visit Tibet?
The best time is from April to October. The weather is mild and the skies are clear. Winter (Nov to Feb) is very cold and not all areas are open.
What is the main risk of altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness is a real risk. Most of Tibet is over 3,500 meters. Our trips are planned to help you adjust slowly.
How can I prevent altitude sickness?
Go slowly. Do not rush. Drink 3-4 liters of water every day. Do not drink alcohol or smoke. Your guide will help you.
Is altitude sickness a concern in Tibet?
Yes, Tibet is at high altitude. It’s important to acclimate slowly and stay hydrated.
Is Tibet safe to visit?
Yes, it is very safe. Crime rates are low. The main concerns are altitude and road safety. We use safe drivers and good cars.
Do I need special permits to visit Tibet?
Yes, travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit issued through a registered tour operator.
What money should I use in Tibet?
You must use the Chinese Yuan (CNY). You should change your money in Kathmandu or Lhasa. US dollars are not accepted in shops or small towns.
Can I use credit cards or ATMs?
Only at some high-end hotels and big banks in Lhasa. Do not rely on them. Bring enough cash for your whole trip.
Is there internet or Wi-Fi?
Hotels in big cities like Lhasa and Shigatse have Wi-Fi. It can be slow. It will not be available in small towns or at Everest Base Camp.
What is the food like?
You will eat Chinese (Sichuan) food in most small towns. In Lhasa, you can find Tibetan and Nepali food. Tibetan food includes tsampa (barley flour) and butter tea.
Is there a dress code?
Yes, for monasteries. You must cover your shoulders and knees. You also must remove hats and sunglasses. Dress in layers. It can be cold in the morning and warm in the day.
What should I pack?
Pack warm layers. Bring a fleece jacket, a windproof jacket, warm pants, and a hat. Sunglasses are very important. The sun is strong at high altitude.
What power plugs are used in Tibet?
Tibet uses Chinese plug sockets. These are types A and I. Bring a universal travel adapter.
How do I get to Tibet?
You can fly into Lhasa. Or, you can travel overland from Kathmandu, Nepal. Our "Nepal and Tibet Tour" uses this famous land route.
