You are an adventurer at heart. You have seen the pictures of Everest and Annapurna, and while they are beautiful, you are looking for something more. You want to walk on trails that are not crowded. You dream of a journey into the wild, remote corners of the Himalayas, to places where the culture is ancient and the landscapes are raw and untouched.
Imagine trekking for weeks towards the base of the world's third highest mountain, through a land of pristine forests and rare wildlife. Picture yourself in the "wild west" of Nepal, exploring a hidden kingdom of ancient monasteries and turquoise lakes. Think of a journey where you are one of only a handful of trekkers, receiving a warm and genuine welcome in every small village you visit. This is the experience that awaits on Nepal's other, lesser-known trails.
This guide is for the trekker who wants to go beyond the famous routes. It introduces you to the incredible adventures waiting in the remote eastern and western regions of Nepal. These treks are more challenging and require a greater sense of adventure, but the rewards are immense. This is your gateway to the wild, untouched soul of the Himalayas.
Choosing a less-traveled route is a decision to experience the Himalayas in their most authentic form. Here is what makes these journeys so special.
On these treks, you will often walk for hours without seeing another trekking group. This allows for a profound connection with nature. You can hear the wind in the pines, the call of a distant bird, and the crunch of your own boots on the trail. The mountains feel bigger, the valleys feel deeper, and the experience is more personal and powerful.
The villages in these remote regions see very few outside visitors. This means the local culture is often more preserved and traditional. The welcome you receive is incredibly genuine. You are not just another tourist; you are a guest. This leads to more meaningful interactions with the local Rai, Limbu, Bhote, and Dolpo-pa people, offering a true glimpse into their ancient way of life.
These treks are, by nature, more challenging. The trails are more rugged, the lodges are simpler, and some routes even require camping. This makes the journey a true adventure. Reaching the base camp of a remote peak like Kanchenjunga or Makalu, or completing a trek through Upper Dolpo, provides a deep sense of accomplishment that is hard to match on the more popular routes.
These treks take you through some of Nepal's most pristine and protected national parks. You will walk through immense, old-growth forests and see a huge variety of plants and animals. These regions are often sanctuaries for rare wildlife, including the Snow Leopard, Red Panda, and Blue Sheep, offering a better chance of spotting these incredible creatures.
Here are some of the best "other treks" in Nepal. Each one offers a unique and unforgettable journey into the wild heart of the Himalayas.
All of these "other treks" are located in restricted or protected areas. This means special permits are required, and there are strict rules.
These treks are more difficult than the popular routes. You need a high level of physical fitness and should be in excellent health. You must be prepared for long walking days, rugged trails, and significant altitude gain. For treks like Upper Dolpo, previous high-altitude trekking experience is required. We highly recommend a dedicated training program before you arrive in Nepal.
What makes these “other treks” different from Everest or Annapurna?
They are generally less crowded, more culturally unique, and offer offbeat experiences away from mainstream trails.
Do I need special permits for these treks?
Some, like Upper Mustang and Kanchenjunga, require restricted area permits, while others only need national park or conservation permits.
Are these treks harder than the popular routes?
Many of them are more challenging due to remoteness, limited facilities, and longer routes, but some like Mardi Himal are short and moderate.
