At the top of Island Peak (6189 meters), be confronted with a heart-stopping panorama of the Everest region. Take a look around you and see glimmering mountain peaks in each direction. To the east, Makalu (8481 meters) and Baruntse (7129 meters) appear at eye level. To the north, Nuptse (7879 meters) and Lhotse (8501 meters) shine bright. To the south of us, the iconic Ama Dablam peak (6812 meters) stares back at us.

Take some photos to bring back memories, but also try and admire them in the present. Those moments of standing at the top of Island Peak only happen once!

As with all peak climbing excursions, the ascent does not come without a little work beforehand. However, it’s not so much work when you are enjoying it! After flying to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (aka the most dangerous airport in the world), begin hiking up towards Namche Bazaar. Through forests and villages, the expansive trade and tourism town provide a perfect opportunity to learn about the Sherpa community.
Our level of energy and excitement builds as we near Island Peak Base Camp. At Island Peak Base Camp, we realize we are truly in the mountains. We take a day to acclimatize and brief on the upcoming ascent. Then we head further to High Camp to again acclimatize and have one last look to make sure the gear is as ready as we are. Finally, the time comes. Wake up in the middle of the night, before sunrise, to begin the climb.
We must maximize our chances of good weather. At the jaw-dropping peak, we celebrate a successful climb and take some photos. The splendor of the view cannot be described! You must see if to believe it. After some time at the peak, head back down to Lukla.
