The Khopra Danda (Ridge) Trek is yet another new and exciting trail in the Annapurna region. It is unlisted in most guidebooks and few companies even offer the package. Hike through thick forests up to a ridge that opens to an astonishing panoramic view of the Himalayas. Throughout the trail, let the views of Annapurna South (7,219m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m), Dhaulagiri (8167m), and others take your breath away. The mountain views come after an already wonderful foothill journey.
The trail starts as most in the Annapurna region do – with a short drive to Nayapul. Admire the forested hills, terraced fields, and charming villages. Observe bird species you have never seen before and perhaps some langurs swinging from tree to tree. Soon, the trail departs from the Annapurna Base Camp trail into a more remote area. From Khopra Ridge (3,660 meters), on the flanks of Annapurna South, an unobstructed view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks is seen.
If you have time and energy, it is highly recommended to spend another day to move up to Khayer Lake (4,600 meters). It’s a strenuous, but very rewarding journey. There are no places to sleep up there, so we camp at or nearby the majestic lake.
One awesome part of the Khopra Danda trail is that trekkers stay in community lodges and homestays along most parts of the trail. While staying here, gain knowledge about the local culture and customs, while learning about their eco-friendly practices.
Returning from Khopra Danda, we take a different path. Instead of backtracking to Dhan Kharka and Swanta, we move forward to Bayeli and Tadapani, finishing the (nearly) loop trail. Each day is different on the KhopraDanda Trek, so let your eyes enjoy the delightful scenery at all times.
The total length of the Khopra Danda Trek is only about 5-6 days. It is a perfect quick getaway from Kathmandu, and just an overall refresher to the business of everyday life. Take a refreshing trip and find joy in the little things. Take pleasure in a cool mountain breeze and the sound of bird’s chirping. You will not regret it!
Adventurers of all ages and experience levels should take the Khopra Danda Trek! This spectacular journey can even be your first trek – and a memorable one at that. The trail reaches a maximum altitude 3,660 meters (or 4,600 meters with a side trip to Khayer Lake). With several days to acclimatize, this altitude should be no problem.
You can take the Khopra Danda Trek all throughout the year. The best times to make the trip, though, are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These seasons provide the best weather and clearest skies, not to mention that during the springtime, rhododendron and other alpine flowers are in bloom. Third Eye Adventure Pvt. Ltd. handles the trek with complete management. If you have any questions about the trek, do ask!
