Step away from the popular, yet often crowded Annapurna and Everest region for a delightful adventure into Langtang Valley. The third most popular trekking region in Nepal – Langtang – is a true gem just north of Kathmandu. It is the most accessible trekking spot and has unbelievable mountain views. The trail takes trekkers up through terraced fields and dense forests while following the Langtang River. Follow the trail further as it enters the lovely Langtang Valley and then to the alpine pasture of Kyanjin Gompa. Watch your jaw drop as you view the expansive Langtang Himal from Kyanjin Gompa or one of the several spectacular viewpoints that lead even higher in elevation.
The beauty of the Langtang Valley Trek is that you can explore mountain villages and see the mighty Himalayas without being at an uncomfortably high altitude. The highest point reached is Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 meters. However, it is tough to leave the Langtang region without taking advantage of its many day trip opportunities. Follow the Langtang River to the Langshisha Kharka, a high alpine meadow that provides incredible views of Dorje Lakpa (6,966 meters) and Penthang Karpo Ri (6,830 meters). Or, see the crazy views at Kyanjin Ri (4,773 meters) or Tsergo Ri (4,984 meters).
The trek begins with an eight hour drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Begin hiking through villages and near their agricultural field, up to the forests. In the springtime, the forests (filled with rhododendron trees) show their bright, vibrant colors. The forests are also home to some wild animal species, including the rare Red Panda. In fact, the Langtang region is renowned for its vast array of wildlife. Other wildlife found in Langtang National Park includes the Himalayan black bear, the goat-like Himalayan tahr, and more.
The Langtang region is home to the Tamang ethnic group. Tamang people practice Tibetan Buddhism like their neighbors and distant relatives in Tibet. The religion plays a big part in their everyday lives and you will notice numerous shrines, prayer flags, mani walls, and chhortens, scattered along the trail. The admirable Tamang culture adds another dimension of fascination to the Langtang Valley Trek.
Trekkers of all experience levels can enjoy the Langtang Valley Trek. It is not too long and does not reach into too high of altitudes. It also provides a perfect combination of nature, with its high mountain viewpoints, dense forests, and rushing rivers, and culture, with its charming Tamang and other mixed ethnic villages. Join the Langtang Valley Trek, you will not regret it!
You can take the Langtang Valley Trek all throughout the year. The best times to make the trip, though, are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These seasons provide the best weather and clearest skies, not to mention that during the springtime, beautiful flowers are in bloom. Third Eye Adventure Pvt. Ltd. handles the trek with complete management. If you have any questions about the trek, do ask!
